Graphic Design

A Journey

From a young age, when I saw book covers, movie posters, and video game packaging, I was always fascinated with the artwork and designs. I always enjoyed making holiday cards by hand and pushed myself to do “something cool” every time. So, when I discovered Graphic Design, I was excited by the possibilities. It wasn’t until my junior year of college that I realized I could turn this passion into a carrier.

Below, you’ll see the results of my graphic design studies while in undergraduate school. Between my major in graphic design and my minor in art, my technical skills and eye for beauty grew exponentially.

My Studies

I majored in graphic design and minored in art while in undergraduate school. I took classes ranging from basic 2-D design to Publication to Calligraphy and Typography. I’ve sampled many of the main aspects of the industry, which gave me the opportunity to discover my strengths and weaknesses as well as which areas of design are most suitable for me.

Graphic Designers are problem solvers, story tellers, and artists. They share your message, connect you to your audience, and ensure clarity and smooth operation all while ensuring results that you are proud to share. I feel that I can proudly wear these titles and call myself a Graphic Designer.

Portfolio

Publication

From authoring and editing to layout and design. Publications are some of the first sources of mass-produced graphic design. This branch of design is one of the clearest ways that graphic designers exercise their story telling muscles.

Magazine Layout

The Dragon’s Legacy is an exploration of different cultures and the draconic figures found within their mythologies. You’ll find spreads decorated in the style of the dragon’s culture.

Book Covers

Book Covers for three classic novels with different publication styles. Two designs are in the style of Penguin Classics publications, and the last one is a full dust jacket with inside flap designs. Mockups of each book cover help the viewer better understand what the complete product could look like.

Drawing, Digital Illustration, and Technical Drawing

From fine arts to industrial design, I have truly found a passion for all things drawing. Drawing forces the mind to explore both problem-solving, design, and beauty. One of the most challenging parts of drawing is translating what you actually see as opposed to what you think you see.

Playing Cards

I have found that one of my favorite kinds of design are playing cards. They are filled with rich history and have influenced the entire world. From gambling to religion, pop culture to personal gifts, playing cards are easy to overlook.

Here, you can see the progression of both illustrative skill and creative confidence. The first deck was the first major project in my graphic design course, the second deck was about a year into my studies, while the last deck was my capstone project.

I hope to revive the intellectual side of playing cards, so this final deck, is meant to pique curiosity in these European Folk characters and inspire exploration into their stories.
